Muddiest Point

Follow the first week of semester, my most unclear point would have to be the the patterns in Mass Spec. plots. This concept was covered on the in class powerpoint. I have trouble determing the possible identities of the compounds simply by looking at the plots. I know there are characteristic patterns associated with each functional group but have to grasp the concept. I know, though that with more practice and studying, I can see a clear correlation in the plots and find a pattern associated with the functional groups.

  1. If you are not understanding how to determine the different patterns of functional groups that is on IR not Mass Spec. I was unclear on this topic too until we discussed it more in depth during lab. It also discusses it more in chapter 21 if you wish to look into that. Practicing will probably be the best way for all of us to get the hang of it.

  2. so far, i'm not liking organic II that much. it is really confusing with the graphs and everything. thanks Erica for the tips, it really is helpful. read through your text book and your problems and if you don't understand it, i would suggest you look at other textbooks or websites. each site has a way of explaining the concept so by reading through you will be able to finally figure it out.
    good luck.

  3. To determine the patterns or the compounds from the mass spectrometry remember that it is a plot of each cation. In addition to this, we have to remember the rules when looking at mass spec which include the nitrogen rule and our functional groups and where they fall in the mass spec. With the IR spec if it is bonded to a H then it will have a higher frequency whereas it is a single bond it will be in the fingerprint region.
